Is Art an Important Part of School?

Is art an important part of school? Think before you answer that question. Personally I feel that art is very imortant for students. Some students who might not succeed in math, english, or sciences might be very artistic. All students need to have their nitch in life that they feel like they succeed. Some children who struggle with everyday life are sometimes very artistic. They just need this way to express themselves. Which leads me to my overall point. Art is a way for students to express themselves. If art is taken out of schools how will these students express themselves. Is it really okay to let students fall through the cracks just becuase its a hand full of students versus a room full of students? NO! All students should be able to have art as a form of expression and visual learning.

I think art can be a very useful tool. You can tell a lot of things about a child through the art that they draw; maybe even things that child wouldn't tell you otherwise. I agree that art is an important part of not just school, but a child's life in general.

Art is something that is hard to teach in my opinion. I remember my 1st day of 7th grade art class. We were asked to draw the best thing that happened to us over summer and I drew me (as a stick figure) at Pet Land getting a cat. I didn't know stick figures were not allowed and I got a really bad grade because of it. This made me hate art class and I still cringe when I see my former art teacher. I believe that some students have a knack for art and that is great but if I had to spend 20 minutes coloring versus 20 minutes discussing critical thinking skills in math...I would choose math. In life few of us will be artists but all of us will need to know how to read, write, do math, etc.

I think art is very important. It helps children express their thougths and feelings without words and for some students words don't come as easy. It is also important for them to not only paint and color but to learn art as history because art tells alot of history.

I completely agree with the fact that everyone needs to find their niche in life and for some that is a form of art. Art has been put on the backburner of our educational systems for a long time and often just forgotten about. Isn't our new way of thinking and teaching supposed to be allowing students to explore and learn by the way the do it best, well for some students as you said, that may be art or music, not math or science. I feel everyone should be exposed to all subjects and required to be able to function in these subjects but if they are especially good at art or music, then nurture and encourage that talent, don't put it down.

I do not think that art should be taken out of the curriculum, but I do feel that the other subjects should come first. If some kids are having trouble in math, they should spend more time working with the problem instead of running from it. My sister was great in art when she went to school. I believe that it boosted her confidence.

I think are is an important subject. Only if the teacher will let the student express themselves in any way that they would like. I don't believe that they should get a bad grade because they may not draw as good as their neighbor. But like you said every child has their niche and for some children art may be it.

I agree with you. I know that when I was in school I hated art, mainly because I can't draw. I can remember how some of the students loved that time of day when we did our drawings. They felt like they could do anything and it really was their time to shine and get bragged on. I think that is very important to some students and should not be taken out of school.

I like this blog! I have been preaching this statement for a long time. Not only is art very important; I think that you should incorporate art into as many other subjects as you possibly can. Like you said..everyone needs a nitch..a boost in confidence!

I agree that art is an integral part of the education of our future. I loved art when I was in school. Not only Art itself should be taught. I think the "Arts" (Drama, Art, Music, etc.) should be taught. Students should have the option to take whichever subject they want from grade school up.

I think art is a very useful teaching tool as well. Some children learn with more hands on projects rather then just someone telling them what to do. Give kids some construction paper, tell them to draw their favorite thing, then, when the fun is finished, make them write and tell you about why they chose that. Art can be very helpful and very interactive in ANY classroom enviroment and absolutely SHOULD NOT taken out of the school system.

Art is very useful. It lets the children express themselves and use their imagination. I am not a very artsy person but that could have been changed if it had been presented to me at a young age. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels that Art was neglected at their school. Nice Post!

I agree. I do know many times people want to leave out art and music saying it doesn't count. It's not a "real" subject. You're right a lot of people do express themselves through art and other ways. It's also not for everyone either, but by no means do I believe it should be taken out of school.

I agree with you because I feel that art should not be taken out of school. Alot of times in schools Art is over looked and is never recognized. I think that Art is very useful to students and it allows students to express themselves.

I loved art in school, it was one of the things that I felt comfortable with and that relieved stress. I think it’s a great tool and it gets you thinking, not to mention the hand eye coordination ( that I have issues with). You have to think about what will go there and what colors will look good here. I loved art, art is a fun class , but it can also be useful. My brother is going into graphic design, how would he get there without art.

I feel that art classes in school are very important. I also remember my 7th grade art class. We had the chance to learn some history and basic art skills, which were beneficial. Art classes are important for students; it allows them to express themselves and gives them a break from the usual “drill”. I also feel that high schools need to provide more art based electives for those students that may not do as well as others in math and science based subjects. This would allow students to have more career options such as graphic design.

I agree, art to me is just as important as math. This is one subject I always enjoyed in school and it was a mind break from all the other classes that I had. I think it allows a door to open into the artistic world that we can see all around us.

Art should never leave the school's curriculum. This subject is just important as any other subject. Art helps a child to learn about different cultures.Without Art,how would a child express their true emotions? Learning to interpret a painting gives great satisfaction to a student. Every great piece of artwork deserves much needed credit.Great people have stemmed from having a childhood talent;such as Art.

I agree that art and free of expression are important and should not be taken out of the curriculum, but I don't think art should be a first priority. There are more important subjects that need to be learned as well. Also I think that art should be taught not just as being able to draw and express yourself, but learn the names of artists and famous paintings as well.

I love art I was art major in high school and I don't think art should be thought of as a lower class subject, sure math and english and all the others are important but you need to have a fun class which allows for expression or if you just like to draw.

I think art is very important. Some students may not feel like it is and may not be as much interested in it as others, but some students have a passion for art. You need to be able to show your artistic side and explore different talents that you may not know you have.

I love art and I think it is very important to have it in schools. Same as music and PE. Everyone has different talents that have to be found. My brother in law is not very good with school and books, but he is an artist, and that helps him express himself and sometimes deal with depression.
